Mango from Sicily? Yes. Over the last couple of decades the island's subtropical pockets have quietly become mango country, and Rete in Campagna, a network of organic Sicilian growers better known for their blood oranges, grow theirs certified organic under the same Mediterranean sun. Picked ripe in the late-summer season, not shipped green from the other side of the world.

The flesh is firm, deep orange and almost fiberless, with thin skin and an intense, honeyed sweetness. Eat it just as it is, cubed over yogurt or ice cream, or sliced into a salad with chilli and lime. A short-season treat, and a far shorter journey than most mangoes make to reach you.
